Shrinkage

For me, Piet Stockmans' recent work in porcelain is without doubt the most fascinating thing he has ever realised. 

He reuses the moulds, which have served for serial production of tableware, as a basis for the creation of unique objects. 

By presenting the result each time with the mould from which it was created, we as spectators can trace the genesis, the different stages of the work's creation process. 

Near the tightly geometric shape, the womb, lies the organic foetus. 

Through minimal intervention by the artist during the production process, the object frees itself from its original mould shape. Not only the shape changes, but also the size, as shrinkage occurs during firing in the kiln at 1400°C. 

The material, porcelain clay, thus dictates its laws, but does not escape the artist's manipulation and premeditation. 

The result is anything but unambiguous, as we are confronted with opposites: solid and liquid, glazed and unglazed, strong and fragile, self-evidence and alienation, rationality and mystery, but also with the beauty of logic.
