Masks


Beware the name of this 1993 artwork “masks.” For this is not a set of anonymous masks but rather the artist's edited self-portrait. Like a true Francis Bacon, Piet Stockmans portrays himself in an inimitable way: torn, flattened, mutilated. By damaging himself, he prevents mutilation by the viewer and retains control over the game of seeing and being seen, of questioning and being questioned, of judging and being judged.
